Janice Mills is a mature aged PhD candidate with a passion for the visual arts. She is now achieving her dream of completing a PhD whilst building her visual art practice. Her skills include graphic art for the print industry, teaching art to children and adults, writing user guides, learning manuals and courses, and producing artworks. She is interested in the practical/business side of the arts and feels that a successful arts practice (and PhD thesis) requires real work application.

Application of Research to Industry

The roles of women in the workplace is an ongoing issue, in addition, how they are perceived in the arts world is still not on par with their male colleagues. I consider that a broader understanding of how a fairer system can transparently work needs to be considered. Government and industry also need to think about the fact that gender bias is not the only impediment to the success for some womens’ professional goals, as women continue to carry much of the burden in the family. My research addresses some of these issues, but the act of research in itself is important for industry, as it can be applied in a multitude of professional and industrial arenas.
