Optimisation and Application of High Speed Metal 3D Printing

Engineering, IT, Mathematics and Statistics

PLEASE NOTE

This research internship is funded in partnership with Defence Science Institute. Candidates from universities outside Victoria are ineligible to apply.

ABOUT THE INDUSTRY PARTNER

SPEE3D is a leading metal additive manufacturing company dedicated to the research, development, and delivery of metal 3D printers and integrated systems utilising its patented Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing (CSAM) technology. SPEE3D’s products enable significantly faster production than traditional metal manufacturing for a wide range of metals, including Copper, Aluminium, Stainless Steel, Aluminium Bronze, and Nickel Aluminium Bronze Expeditionary.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

Innovative Environment: Students will have the opportunity of being engaged by a leading company at the forefront of additive manufacturing technology. SPEE3D’s cold spray technology, uniquely adapted with advanced software and algorithms, enables the creation of real-world parts in record time—1,000 times faster than traditional 3D metal printing.

Hands-on Learning: Engage in scaling up business operations and contribute to the development of new products through hands-on research and development. Students will gain insights into cutting-edge technology and witness machines being built onsite, providing valuable experience in industrial manufacturing processes.

Career Development: Gain practical experience in a dynamic environment that fosters innovation and technical expertise. This opportunity will enhance students’ skills in additive manufacturing, product development, and research, positioning them competitively in the field of advanced manufacturing and technology.

RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED

Research will entail a number of areas based on the chosen candidates skills and interests. Areas may include:
1. Materials development, testing, certification and compliance.
2. Mechanical design of components and parts using 3D printer.
3. Improve processes and procedures used for manufacture of 3D printer parts.
4. Testing and qualification processes for parts across a range of applications.
The successful candidate will be required to have to both design and practical skills.

SKILLS WISH LIST

If you’re a postgraduate research student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage women, indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:

  • Has a good understanding of 3D CAD Modelling and 2D Drawing techniques
  • Mechanical, Mechatronic Bachelor Degree pathway
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings
  • Ability and enthusiasm to perform hands-on mechanical tasks as required
  • Strong attention to detail and methodical work style
  • Ability to liaise and negotiate with internal and external suppliers
  • Ability to support root cause analysis activities
  • Problem solving skills
  • Skills in Microsoft Office applications

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

The company wishes to optimise and find the 3D printing process to enable our customers to quickly and efficiently use the technology. These internal learnings will be documented and flow through to new standard operating procedures and test performance data. Additionally, new materials and processes could be developed, enhancing our product offerings.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The intern will receive $3,000 per month of the internship, usually in the form of scholarship payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.

The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.

Please note, applications are reviewed regularly and this internship may be filled prior to the advertised closing date if a suitable applicant is identified. Early submissions are encouraged.
