PLEASE NOTE

  • Students are required to provide a pitch document as part of their application, where they propose a research project in one of the 5 areas DLR are seeking.
  • This research internship is funded in partnership with Space Research Network (SRN). Students from the following NSW SRN member Universities can apply: UNSW, USyd, UTS, UoN, UoW, MQ, WSU and ANU.
  • Due to the sensitivity and security of this project, international students will be considered based on their citizenship. Candidates will be subject to an export control check before acceptance.

ABOUT THE INDUSTRY PARTNER

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Space Propulsion holds unique expertise in Europe in developing and operating engine test stands. Since 1959, the Lampoldshausen, Germany site has tested and advanced rocket and space system engines for the European space program. Their cutting-edge research and full-scale flight engine testing drive innovation in propulsion technology.

This internship offers a rare opportunity for NSW postgraduate research students to collaborate with top-tier aerospace experts. You’ll join active projects, while also working on independent research, shaped in partnership with the department head and supervisors. Plus, the timing of the internship is flexible and can be negotiated to suit your academic schedule.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

  • Financial support: You will be eligible to negotiate further living assistance, including accommodation and other expenses related to your stay in Germany.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Applicants are encouraged to submit a proposal, developed with your academic supervisor, addressing one of the five key research areas at DLR. The final project plan will be customised to your strengths and interests, in collaboration with DLR.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

If you’re a postgraduate research student passionate about tinkering, simulation modelling, and experimenting, we want to hear from you!

We especially encourage applications from Female, First Nations, and disadvantaged students.

Preferred Background:

  • Mechanical, Mechatronic, Aerospace, Electrical, or Software Engineering
  • Physics or Chemistry

BUILD YOUR DREAM INTERNSHIP

You’ll have the unique chance to tailor your research topic to your expertise and DLR’s core research areas, shaping an internship that aligns with your academic goals.

FINANCIAL DETAILS

The successful candidate will receive $4,000 AUD per month of the internship through SRN funding as a stipend via your University. While travel funds are not included, you are encouraged to seek additional funding through your university.

FLEXIBLE START DATE: The internship’s start date is flexible and can be negotiated to fit your availability.
