Pramita is an experienced biotechnology professional, currently completing a PhD in ‘Investigating nutrient assimilation in marine picocyanobacteria by zooming into transporter proteins ‘. The research aims to improve our understanding of nutrient acquisition in marine cyanobacteria, how they respond to expanding stressed conditions in the oligotrophic oceans, and how this may result in shift in community and affect productivity and biogeochemical cycling in the oceans that is the basis of the whole ecosystem.

Pramita has experience as a Research Assistant at a Bioengineering company, and more than four years of laboratory experience. She is skilled in molecular and protein biochemistry techniques including cloning, DNA extraction, PCR, sequence analysis, gel electrophoresis, protein expression and purification, SDS PAGE. During her time as a Research Assistant, Pramita was part of a time optimising and developing a high throughput transformation technique, which proved to be successful in reducing time for researchers and costs for the company.

Technical Skills

  • Molecular biology techniques including DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, gel extraction, SDS PAGE analysis
  • Genetic manipulation techniques including electroporation, conjugation, homologous recombination
  • Plasmid assembly methods including cloning, transformation, Gibson assembly and ligation independent cloning
  • Recombinant protein expression and purification using affinity and size exclusion chromatography
  • Flow cytometry to monitor growth for cell culture maintenance and gene expression studies
  • Experience of working in a Bio foundry and using high throughput instruments such as ECHO acoustic liquid handler, ZAG DNA analyser, BD influx cell sorter
