AI-Enhanced Simulation Performance Scorecard for Maritime Port Navigation

Engineering, IT, Mathematics and Statistics

ABOUT THE INDUSTRY PARTNER

Pivot Maritime International is an Australian maritime simulation, training and consultancy company based in Legana, Tasmania. Founded in 1996, it is the only Australian manufacturer of highly portable maritime simulators, serving defence, commercial shipping and small craft markets both domestically and internationally. Their simulation systems are known for their accuracy, flexibility and affordability, providing realistic training environments for navigation, shiphandling and operational decision-making. In addition to technology development, Pivot offers expert maritime consultancy services that support performance improvement, safety assessment and operational analysis for shipowners, ports, regulators and other stakeholders across the maritime industry.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

This project offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, simulation technology, and maritime safety, delivering tangible innovation within a high-impact training environment.

RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED

Using real-world navigational scenarios modelled within PivotMaritime’s simulation platform, the student will work with structured simulation data to train AI models capable of analysing vessel manoeuvring decisions, rule compliance, situational awareness, and operational efficiency during port approaches. The simulations provide a controlled yet realistic environment in which navigational behaviour can be assessed against established maritime rules, port protocols, and best-practice standards.
A central component of the project is the creation of an intelligent feedback loop embedded within the simulation workflow. Rather than simply completing a training exercise, users will receive AI-generated insights into their performance. The system will evaluate decision-making processes, adherence to navigational regulations, safety margins, and risk mitigation strategies.

SKILLS WISH LIST

If you’re a postgraduate research student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage women, indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:
The intern will play a key technical role in model development, data analysis, and validation, applying machine learning techniques, feature engineering, and explainable AI principles to ensure outputs are transparent, defensible, and aligned with industry requirements.

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

Ultimately, the AI framework will generate a structured performance scorecard following each simulated exercise. This scorecard will provide measurable indicators across defined criteria, supporting enhanced training outcomes, benchmarking, and continuous improvement. By integrating AI-driven analysis into PivotMaritime’s simulation technology, the project aims to elevate the depth, precision, and educational value of maritime training programs.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The intern will receive $3,300 per month of the internship, usually in the form of scholarship payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.

The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.

Please note, applications are reviewed regularly and this internship may be filled prior to the advertised closing date if a suitable applicant is identified. Early submissions are encouraged.
