Software Development of a Dynamic Hexapod Construction Robot
Engineering, IT, Mathematics and Statistics
ABOUT THE INDUSTRY PARTNER
Crest Robotics is an Australian startup aiming to drive work place injury to zero through innovative and practical robotic tools that reduce the cost, burdens, and risk associated with heavy industrial labour. The company was founded in 2023, currently has 6 employees, and is based at Australia’s Largest deeptech incubator, Cicada Innovations, in Eveleigh.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
- Opportunity to apply research skills in a dynamic hi-tech startup environment to solve real world problems.
- Contributing to a world first automated construction method with lunar and terrestrial application.
- Experience working within the commercial imperatives related to research in an entrepreneurial startup environment.
RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED
Crest Robotics is building the world’s first dynamic hexapod robot for the construction of sustainable, low-carbon buildings, using an innovative new construction technique from Earthbuilt technologies. The technique is similar to a technique known as Earth bagging, but takes it to the next level with advanced automation dramatically reducing the labour involved. Crest is developing this technique both for terrestrial applications, but also as a viable construction technique for lunar bases which is a big focus of the Artemis Accords. Crest will be demonstrating the construction technique at this years IAC2025 conference, which is the world’s largest space conference that is coming to Sydney this October.
SKILLS WISH LIST
If you’re a postgraduate research student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage women, indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:
- Experience with C++, ROS/ROS2, Git, Python, Object-Oriented Design, Ubuntu/Linux, experience working with robotic hardware, autonomy/software design.
- The ideal candidate would also have experience with bash, drake cpp/py, sensor integration, network protocols, experience with large and/or fast-paced projects, project management skills.
- Prior knowledge and experience in robotics control, path planning, trajectory planning is desirable.
- Excellent communicator
RESEARCH OUTCOMES
Crest Robotics are looking to engage a robotics software engineer to work with the team, all of whom have PhD’s and prior experience in robotics control and motion planning. Researchers will get access to a one-of-a-kind platform for developing algorithms across robotics including control, motion planning, SLAM, and estimation.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The intern will receive $3,300 per month of the internship, usually in the form of scholarship payments.
It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.
The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.
Please note, applications are reviewed regularly and this internship may be filled prior to the advertised closing date if a suitable applicant is identified. Early submissions are encouraged.
