  • Be trained in and work on a modern data engineering stack: Snowflake, Snowplow, AWS, DBT, Python, and Power BI
  • Apply real-world data analysis methods and best practices
  • Develop advanced data modelling and dashboard-building expertise
  • Enhance Python and Power BI skills for analytics and visualisation
  • Strengthen project management and prioritisation through hands-on research projects
  • Improve stakeholder management and meeting facilitation
  • Gain exposure to decision-making processes in a high-profile media environment

RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED

  1. Identify and evaluate advanced metrics for measuring push notification impact (e.g., session duration, click-through rate, user retention, behavioural differences across referral sources).
  2. Develop a predictive model or decision framework to recommend optimal notification timing, content, and frequency for maximum engagement with minimal user fatigue.
  3. Propose and validate a system for ongoing assessment of notification performance, ensuring consistent, data-driven improvements.

SKILLS WISH LIST

If you’re a postgraduate research student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage women, indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:

Core Skills:
  • Statistical modelling
  • Python – Particularly in data transformation and modelling using packages such as Pandas or NumPy
  • SQL (Snowflake is what you will be using but any experience with any system is great)
Auxiliary Skills:
  • Working with analytical or relational databases
  • Git and coding in a team-based environment
  • Data presentation and visualization such as with Power Bi, Tableau
  • Experience with large event-based data sets

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

A concise report for news editors who decide on the push notifications, outlining key findings and recommended practices, plus alterations to an existing dashboard showcasing real-time push notification performance and engagement metrics. These deliverables will integrate with existing systems. The final presentation will include high-level insights derived from the research.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The intern will receive $3,300 per month of the internship, usually in the form of scholarship payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.
