  • Transport planning: Develop knowledge of Australian planning processes related to transport;
  • Mentorship from Industry Experts: Receive direct mentorship from industry planning and urban design experts and software developers;
  • Industry relevant experience: Contribute to a growing transport industry in Australia; and
  • Network Building: Engage with professionals in their field, offering opportunities for future collaborations and career advancements within the architecture, planning and transport industry.

RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED

Our aim is for this database to contain relevant planning controls for a wide variety of transport modes in major Australian cities. The model will enable us to compare planning controls existing transport nodes, to rapidly test the potential land use and development outcomes of proposed transport nodes.

Based on similar precedents, the model will allow a data-informed quantification of utility and benefits associated with proposed interventions, such as increased uplift, growth in dwellings, jobs, & amenities and additional social infrastructure such as schools.

Ultimately, we would like this model to assist in establishing locations that optimise investment and benefits to communities and our cities.

We understand this is a dynamic process that needs to be repeatable and requires software-based solutions including data collection and machine learning algorithms. We have already produced tools that synthesise existing data. What we need are tools that can expand our data sets and improve their consolidation based on various conditions.

SKILLS WISH LIST

If you’re a postgraduate research student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:

  • Software development skills (Python and/or C# preferred)
  • Understanding of machine learning and/or neural networks
  • Planning experience not necessary but an interest is required (we can teach you relevant planning-related skills)

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

  • Standalone Research report detailing:
    • Software development
    • Database
    • Machine learning component
  • Data base with collected data;
  • Source code; and
  • Presentation of research findings

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The intern will receive $3,000 per month of the internship, usually in the form of scholarship payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.

The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.
