The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and its industry engagement arm, APR.Intern, welcome Prime Minister-elect Anthony Albanese and the incoming Cabinet, following the Australian Labor Party’s election to Federal Government.

AMSI looks forward to continued collaboration with the government and its departments to strengthen Australia’s mathematical sciences and STEM capability from the classroom to universities and industry.

“Reforms to address Australia’s declining mathematics participation must remain a national priority,” said AMSI Director, Professor Tim Marchant.

“Year 12 participation in mathematics is at an all-time low and it is critical we act now to tackle the challenges. Mathematics, statistics and data science skills are key enablers across so many sectors and the severity of this situation will impact Australia’s future workforce capabilities,” continued Professor Marchant.

AMSI acknowledges the outgoing Coalition for its funding and support of nation-building AMSI programs; the AMSI Vacation Schools and Scholarships project (2012-2016), Securing Australia’s Mathematical Workforce program (2016-2021) and the National Research Internships Program (NRIP) (2017-2021).

“We look forward to working with the Albanese Government and continuing to drive programs that strengthen the mathematical sciences and its vital role in Australian education, research, innovation and workforce outcomes” said Professor Marchant.
