Integrated Research develops a product called PROGNOSIS, one aspect of which is to obtain and display resource utilization metrics, including CPU, Process, Memory, Disk and Network, for various operating systems.
Virtualisation implementations on Windows and Unix (AIX, Solaris, HPUX, Linux) complicate the extraction, presentation and interpretation of these metrics.
The research conducted was to understand the issues, understand how to determine overheads imposed by the virtualisation implementation, and understand the ways in which these various metrics may best be presented meaningfully to a System Administrator.
