Engineering, IT, Mathematics and Statistics
ABOUT THE INDUSTRY PARTNER
At BluumBio, we’re redefining what’s possible in sustainable water management. Our mission is to harness the power of biology to create cleaner, more resilient wastewater treatment systems that protect communities and ecosystems. We’re a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and innovators committed to building a future where technology and nature work in harmony.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
- Opportunity to gain experience working in a startup
- Opportunity to gain professional experience in the remediation industry
- Acquire knowledge of integrating biological systems into engineered systems in industrial settings
- Opportunity to lead an engineering project and build demo systems from the ground up working closely alongside industry scientists and customers
- Join the vibrant innovation community at the Sydney Knowledge Hub
- Stay current with emerging technologies in bioreactor design and sustainable wastewater reuse
RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED
- Design and develop biological treatment processes
- Create process flow diagrams
- Design, implement, and build multi-stage bioreactor systems from scratch at benchtop and full field application scale
- Integrate biological systems with mechanical, chemical, and digital process components
- Conduct laboratory- and pilot-scale experiments to evaluate system performance
- Analyze microbial community data and process parameters to optimize treatment efficiency
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to scale biological processes to full-scale facilities
- Prepare technical reports, proposals, and regulatory documentation
SKILLS WISH LIST
If you’re a postgraduate research student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage women, indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, or a related field is a must
- 3+ years of experience in biological wastewater treatment design, operation, or research or a PhD in related fields
- Strong understanding of microbial ecology, bioprocess engineering, and environmental systems modeling
- Hands-on experience with lab-scale bioreactors or pilot-scale water treatment systems
RESEARCH OUTCOMES
The outcome of this project is a demo 10L water treatment system that can be used to validate system performance with clients.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
BluumBio is based in Berkley, California and has a researcher collaboration lab in the Sydney University Knowledge Hub.
The intern will receive $3,300 per month of the internship, usually in the form of scholarship payments.
It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.
The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.
Please note, applications are reviewed regularly and this internship may be filled prior to the advertised closing date if a suitable applicant is identified. Early submissions are encouraged.
