  • Undertake research to generate findings and implications that will underpin the Centre’s published reports and advocacy to governments.

RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED

The detailed scoping of the project will take place in consultation with the student. It is expected that the scope will include:

  • Analysis of relevant Australian research and data to develop a timeline of key issues and developments in the public policy discourse and government policy settings on leadership and management capability in Australia over the last 30 years, with a particular focus on the post-school education and training system (i.e. Vocational Education and Training and higher education).
  • Development of a set of concise findings on the productivity imperative/rationale for an increased focussed on leadership and management capability uplift across Australia’s workforce, that is underpinned by contemporary evidence. This will include particular focus on the role of leadership and management skills in supporting priorities such as the successful adoption of technology and artificial intelligence.
  • Development of evidence-based findings on the most effective actions that can be taken by governments, employers and individuals to lift management and leadership capability in Australia, particularly for middle managers and frontline supervisors.
  • Review of relevant literature to identify policy settings in other comparable nations that successfully support leadership and management capability uplift that may be applicable to the Australian context.
  • Development of findings and implications emerging from the research and analysis that are relevant to governments, industry/employers and the education and training system.
  • Reporting of research findings and implications in a written report.

  • Understanding of and experience working with research material relevant to the proposed project in the Australian context (essential)
  • Ability to analyse and synthesise wide-ranging and complex research and data sets to generate concise, relevant and meaningful insights (essential)
  • Ability to clearly communicate research findings to diverse audiences in a variety of forms (e.g. written, verbal, visually) (essential)
  • Understanding of education and training policy issues relevant to the project (preferable)

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

It is anticipated that the research project will:

  • Generate new and insightful findings from Australian and relevant international literature on the importance of lifting leadership and management capability in Australia.
  • Create an enhanced evidence base on how the education and training system can most effectively encourage and enable an uplift in management and leadership capability across firms and workforces in Australia.
  • Underpin future published report(s) by the Centre.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The intern will receive $3,300 per month of the internship, usually in the form of scholarship payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.

The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.
