In a move designed to strengthen Australia’s biomedical research ecosystem, leading global biopharma company CSL has partnered with APR.Intern to create new opportunities for PhD researchers to gain industry experience ,and foster the next generation of Australian biomedical researchers.
The Australian Biomedical PhD Futures Program is a three-year initiative funded by industry partner CSL and facilitated by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) national industry engagement arm, APR.Intern.
In a bid to strengthen Australia’s biomedical talent pipeline and create meaningful employment pathways for PhD graduates, CSL has provided funding via APR.Intern to support sponsors/organisations to host PhD students around Australia for three to six months.
Dr Michael Wilson, CSL’s Senior Vice President and Head of Global Research, said the program builds on CSL’s longstanding commitment to fostering Australian biomedical research and strengthening the connections between academia and industry.
“Through this partnership, we want to give PhD researchers valuable real-world experience, while helping organisations across Australia’s biomedical ecosystem benefit from their fresh thinking and scientific expertise,” he said. “By creating stronger connections between researchers, universities and industry, we can help build the skills, relationships and opportunities that will support the future of Australian biomedical innovation.”
AMSI Director Professor Tim Marchant said that APR.Intern is Australia’s leading internship program for postgraduate research students.
“Our aim is to create equal opportunities for those who want a career in STEM, and in this instance, biomedicine. It’s wonderful to welcome a global leader like CSL on board who has the right foresight and ambition to develop Australia’s biomedicine industry in the decades ahead.”
“Researchers placed in organisations as part of this program have the potential to advance breakthrough discoveries; a program like this has the power open a world of opportunity,” said Professor Marchant.
APR.Intern National Program Manager Glen Sheldon added “CSL has been one of APR.Intern’s key partners dating back to 2013. In collaboration with APR, they have placed over 30 highly talented PhD students from universities across Australia into their business to develop vital projects and drive innovation.”
“APR is excited to further extend this partnership with CSL to bring the same benefits to the broader Medtech community,” he continued
