Next-Gen Creative AI: Building LLMs for Non-Homogeneous Content Generation

Engineering, IT, Mathematics and Statistics

ABOUT THE INDUSTRY PARTNER

Springboards.ai is an AI-powered platform designed for advertising agencies and creative teams to accelerate ideation and strategy. The AI/ML team at Springboards works on developing LLMs specifically engineered for high-variance creative output.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • Direct Product Impact: Your research won’t sit on a shelf; you will build core technology for Springboards AI that is used by real-world creative professionals.
  • Full-Cycle R&D: Own the entire process, from implementing the latest research papers and benchmarking creativity to deploying your models.
  • Mentorship: Receive 1:1 guidance from a Senior ML Engineer, learning to bridge the gap between academic research and production-grade engineering.
  • Publication Opportunity: We strongly encourage scientific contribution. You will have the opportunity to co-author and publish your findings.

RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED

This project focuses on the development and fine-tuning of Large Language Models (LLMs) specifically engineered to prioritize linguistic variation, divergent thinking, and creative diversity.

Current foundational models often suffer from “mode collapse” or a tendency toward “average” responses, which limits their utility in creative sectors like advertising, screenwriting, and design. This research will explore novel architectures or sampling strategies, such as specialised fine-tuning, Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) focused on creativity metrics, to ensure the model produces non-homogeneous, high-variance outputs.

The intern will help build and train a custom LLM that is specifically designed for creative work. Instead of just predicting the next most likely word, they will develop a system that allows Springboards AI to generate a wide range of unique, brand-specific ideas.

SKILLS WISH LIST

If you’re a postgraduate research student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage women, indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:

  • Machine Learning: Deep experience in Python and PyTorch/TensorFlow.
  • NLP Specialisation: Knowledge of Transformer architectures and LLM fine-tuning (LoRA, QLoRA).
  • Research: Ability to translate academic papers on “creativity in AI” into production-ready experiments.

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

High-Variance LLM: A working model engineered to generate unique, creative responses instead of repetitive text.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The intern will receive $3,300 per month of the internship, usually in the form of scholarship payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.

The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.

Please note, applications are reviewed regularly and this internship may be filled prior to the advertised closing date if a suitable applicant is identified. Early submissions are encouraged.
