ABOUT THE INDUSTRY PARTNER

Enhance Your Options Pty Ltd has developed a proprietary product, the RoToR Payoff Diagrams® which portrays key concepts relating to options theory and trading in a single view, together with a full range of customizable parameters enabling the simulation of scenarios and whatifs. This is orientated consistent with and overlaid onto the historical price chart, unique amongst the trading platforms presently available. The RoToR Payoff Diagrams® is a registered trademark and the subject of a patent application in several jurisdictions.

The RoToR Payoff Diagrams® was developed as an options learning tool for retail traders, providing a seamless teaching path from the basics in theory to practical trading application. This model was developed to fill a perceived deficiency in the current, widely accepted method where fundamental concepts were taught in isolation from the underlying price chart, from which retail traders would ultimately trade from.

RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED

The research aims to identify any statistically significant differences between the RoToR Payoff Diagrams® options tool and the traditional options education tools used to teach options investing/trading. Options are undoubtedly complex, but it is surmised, unnecessarily complicated by the manner in which they are taught. Part of this overcomplication lies in the manner that they are presented, which is contrary to how the concepts would be employed in practice.

To address these issues, Enhance Your Options’ founder and director, Paul McLaren developed the RoToR Payoff Diagrams® tool to facilitate the teaching and subsequent learning of the fundamental concept of options which he believes is more intuitive and practical.

To assess the efficacy of the RoToR Payoff Diagrams® tool, an online experiment has been designed. Participants will comprise an experimental group and a control group. The control group will learn the fundamentals of options using traditional options tools whilst the experimental group will learn the same material using the RoToR Payoff Diagrams® tool and its depiction of the same concepts. The data collected from the online delivery of the course content and the associated assessments and will be analysed using common statistical methods to identify any statistically significant difference between the two groups and therefore between the two methods.

RESEARCH OUTCOMES

The assessment is designed to identify underlying issues in the learning and applying of key concepts in relation to options trading. Merely comparing overall scores between the two groups, or improvement in scores between the two groups, pre- and post- the course would likely yield little insight. To attempt to identify underlying issues that may be evident, the assessment is divided into two parts, an objective part and a subjective part and it is expected that detailed analysis of the responses,

  • between the two groups
  • between the pre- and post- assessment
  • between related questions

Detailed statistics analysis is required using established methods, and it is anticipated that a number of journal publications will be produced.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The intern will receive $3,000 per month of the internship, usually in the form of stipend payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours and maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.

The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.
