Text Mining and Analysis

Location: Melbourne, VIC

Duration: 5 months

Project Background

Aurecon works on some of Australia’s largest engineering and construction projects (eg. Melbourne Metro and Westgate Tunnel). These are highly complex, multi-year projects that involve a wide range of stakeholders. As a result, the client requirements on these projects are sophisticated and extensive. In order to deliver quality work, Aurecon need to unpack and understand these requirements in detail.

These requirements are delivered to Aurecon via extensive project documentation. The length and detail in these documents means that there is the risk of human error when consuming, assessing and interpreting the information.
Emerging capabilities across data analytics and machine learning are presenting opportunities to more easily analyse semi-structured data and documents to extract insights.

Research to be Conducted

To assist our delivery teams, Aurecon is looking for someone experienced in text-mining, machine learning and software development to build upon our existing in-house text/document analysis tool. The successful candidate will work alongside Aurecon’s data science team to achieve the following;

Desktop research

Undertake desktop research to identify best and emerging practices in this domain to inform the approach.

Designing the data analysis methodologies

Designing the data analysis methodologies to best support Aurecon teams analyse and understand requirements in tender documents. Also undertake design of methods to analyse and track changes and trends in client requirements over time so that Aurecon teams can proactively meet these changing requirements more effectively.

Translating analysis requirements into functionality

Translate data analysis methodology into functional requirements that can be implemented into Aurecon’s requirements analysis tool.

Deployment of new version of requirements analysis tool

Work with Aurecon software developers to develop and implement functionality.

Testing and validating with delivery teams

Test and validate effectiveness of the analysis with delivery teams and recommend changes and refinements where appropriate.

Skills Required

If you’re a PhD student and meet some or all the below we want to hear from you. We strongly encourage women, indigenous and disadvantaged candidates to apply:

  • Data science related degree (specialising in text-mining)
  • Software development/programming experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Database architecture and design experience
  • Engineering and construction sector experience
  • Data visualisation

Expected Outcomes

Outcomes of the project would be a report outlining research findings and proposed frameworks, approaches and methodologies.

The report will provide recommendations on how Aurecon could further develop the framework and how it can be adjusted for changing market scenarios.

A working prototype of the functionality is required.

A short weekly blog will also be kept to help communicate the research to the rest of the organisation.

A final presentation will be delivered by the intern at the end of the project period to Aurecon staff

Additional Details

The intern will receive $3,000 per month of the internship, usually in the form of stipend payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours, spending at least 80% of their time on-site with the industry partner.  The intern will be expected to maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.

The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.
