Project Background

Very few people know how to source the right products at the best possible price. Running a simple price comparison is easy, but comparison engines are extremely flawed. The best deals are not usually found by comparison shopping sites, but by real people. Getting the best possible deal is a science.

Bargain hunting is a problem that many forums discuss, such as OzBargain.com.au in Australia, HotUKDeals in the UK and SlickDeals.com in the UnitedS tates. For the first time, this new platform will enable experts who post on these sites to earn money from their knowledge and turn bargain hunting into a game.

Additionally, we currently have a society full of spare capacity. Walk through any shopping centre or high street at 10am on a weekday and you will find endless staff waiting for business to arrive. The platform will enable them to put their time and product knowledge to good use. Similarly, those who review products as a job can now put their expertise to another use, directly helping buyers source the right product for their needs.

BroadHunt need two technology experts to help bring this vision to life. The interns will help research, design and develop the platform, evaluating and deploying advanced technologies to ensure that it is scalable, adaptable, fast, intuitive and low friction. The core of the system will use a software platform such as Sharetribe Flex, Arcadier or Magento.

The platform intends to help buyers to save time and money, while experts compete to find the right product at the best price. Gamification techniques (on top of financial rewards) will be used to engage people and cultivate interest.

This marketplace will be aimed at consumers in Australia and the United States.

Research to be Conducted

This project will require two interns, one to focus on front-end development and the other on system architecture.

  1. Front End
  • How to deploy modern front-end technologies to minimise friction and facilitate an optimal customer experience?
  • What should be the role of react/reactive technologies, Progressive Web Apps (PWA’s), cognitive search, natural language processing, AI chatbots, voice and image recognition?
  • How can we leverage the concepts of gamification?
  1. Architecture
  • What are the leading architecture approaches to ensure new system development projects balance short-term speed-to-market with strategic objectives of being scalable and adaptable?
  • Apply and test how this works in practice.

This business is at an early stage and the successful candidates will have a wonderful opportunity to be part of a fast-growing startup and work directly with the company Founder and CEO. The work will require practical, hands-on development as well as primary and secondary research.

Skills Required

We are looking for a PhD student with the following skills:

ESSENTIAL

  • Cloud, containers, API design, etc, marketplace software platforms, ancillary tools, front-end technologies, and concepts behind UX and gamification.

DESIRABLE

  • Ability to contribute towards digital marketing (e.g. advertising on Google/Facebook and Search Engine Optimisation)

Expected Outcomes

These internship opportunities are unique as the success of the organisation is entirely dependent upon the successful completion of the projects. Market research indicates a very high level of demand for the service, with execution the key to its success.

The outcome from this project will be a Minimum Viable Product to launch in the market, as well as a detailed roadmap for future iterations over 1-3 years, heavily based on the research conducted. That detailed roadmap will consider the set of established technology available today as well as emerging technologies, always with a view to balance innovation with practicality.

Additional Details

The intern will receive $3,000 per month of the internship, usually in the form of stipend payments.

It is expected that the intern will primarily undertake this research project during regular business hours, spending at least 80% of their time on-site with the industry partner.  The intern will be expected to maintain contact with their academic mentor throughout the internship either through face-to-face or phone meetings as appropriate.

The intern and their academic mentor will have the opportunity to negotiate the project’s scope, milestones and timeline during the project planning stage.
