PhDs NOT FLYING UNDER THE RADAR

A new start-up shaping the future of Australian defence and space capabilities has collaborated with the University of Adelaide to access specialist radar skills and further enhance its innovative product range.

The partnership between Silentium Defence and University of Adelaide PhD candidate, Nathan Anderson, was facilitated by APR.Intern; allowing the award-winning enterprise to access expert skills via a tailored, short-term internship.

Based in Adelaide, the Silentium Defence team develops next-generation passive radar technology and improved situational awareness for a variety of Defence and civilian applications.

“With Nathan’s assistance, we were able to successfully characterise the performance of our technology. His complementary skills also supported those already in the team to further enhance our product’s core functionality,” Dr Palmer added.

Nathan had previously created his own radar as part of his studies, with the internship providing exposure to a complete passive radar system at all levels – from mission planning to signal processing.

Nathan’s Academic Mentor, University of Adelaide Senior Lecturer, Dr Brian Ng, was the final element in the internship’s success, available to provide Nathan with guidance throughout the project. He, too, saw the benefit of industry experience.

“Nathan was able to gain new technical skills that complemented his academic research perfectly”, said Dr Ng.

Since the project’s completion, Silentium Defence has offered Nathan a full-time position in a newly created role.
